Anderson Cooper - News Reporter

After earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from Yale University in 1989, Anderson Cooper began his career as a fact-checker for Channel One News, where he forged a press pass and traveled to Southeast Asia to self-produce coverage. He was quickly promoted to correspondent. Comfort has never been Cooper’s strong suit. He has frequently traveled to disaster zones.

Emmy Award-Winning Reporter

The son of heiress Gloria Vanderbilt and screenwriter Wyatt Cooper, Anderson Cooper grew up in the rarified world of Manhattan society. But that didn’t stop him from roaming the globe as a freelance journalist to report on wars, natural disasters, genocide, and other tragedies. His early experiences and the loss of his father and brother drove him to seek out people who “spoke the language of loss.”

After graduating from the Dalton School and Yale University, where he studied Vietnamese at the University of Hanoi, Cooper started working as a journalist with Channel One News. He soon became a senior correspondent and later hosted the reality television show The Mole. His quest to tell urgent far-flung stories helped usher in a new era of more humanistic reporting by television anchors.

His on-air reporting of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation in New Orleans made him a household name and won him a number of major journalism awards, including an Emmy for his coverage of the storm. He also won a National Headliners Award for his tsunami coverage, a Silver Plaque at the Chicago International Film Festival for his report on Bosnia’s civil war, and a Bronze Telly for a segment on political Islam.

Throughout his career, Cooper has been a champion for diversity in the media. He has received several awards, including two Vito Russo Media Awards and has been named a GLAAD Media Champion for his work on LGBT issues.
