Beyonce and Taylor Swift Could Save Movie Theaters
Taylor Swift is a pop music superstar with a devoted fan base. She’s also a cultural and financial juggernaut who’s dominated the industry for years, with several huge tours and plenty of viral moments. But can you claim to be bigger than her? This year, her album “Midnights” topped the Billboard charts, making it her 12th No. 1 album, breaking a record previously held by Barbra Streisand.
But what’s really impressive about her is how she keeps up with the changing landscape of the music industry, and how she adapts to that. She’s very good at communicating all the things that are going on in her career to her fans. For example, she’s one of the few artists to really shine a light on the streaming world and how it works. She also helped bring up the issue of master recordings and re-recording rights, which were never really talked about before.
She’s also very relatable for a lot of people, especially for Millennials and Gen Z. They grew up alongside her and she was singing about a lot of the same experiences that they were having, whether it be their first love or entering adulthood. She’s just been really important for identity development and growth for a lot of people.
And if you’re looking at the sheer number of awards she’s won, it’s hard to beat her. She’s in a league of her own when it comes to the amount of Grammy Awards she’s won.
Musicians have traditionally dominated tour grosses. The top 10 earners on Billboard Boxscore’s list last year included Elton John, Ed Sheeran and Garth Brooks. All of those shows sold out, and the artists earned $400 million or more between them. But some are experimenting with other ways to maximise ticket sales without irritating fans too much. Taylor Swift’s “Reputation” tour offered more tickets to those who bought her merchandise, and other acts are selling seats in batches that get progressively pricier.
In addition to having huge tours, both artists have incredibly dedicated fan bases. It’s hard to determine which one is the more popular, but both have a massive number of followers across various social media platforms. Beyonce is ahead of Taylor Swift in terms of followers on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.
When it comes to music awards, Beyonce has a large lead over Taylor, winning the most Grammy Awards of any artist in history. She’s also the most nominated female performer in history, with a total of 88 nominations and 32 wins.
As a songwriter, Taylor Swift has been very successful, and she’s a master at writing songs that resonate with audiences. She’s very much a writer’s songwriter, and her lyrics often address topics that are relevant to people’s lives.
Jaccodine: She has a great understanding of what the general music fan is interested in. She knows how to communicate with them on streaming revenues, master recordings and re-recording rights. She’s really brought awareness to a lot of issues that the general music fan wasn’t aware of before she came on the scene.
Her 131-date Eras Tour has already broken records as the highest-grossing concert tour in history, and analysts estimate the total economic impact of her performances on host cities will exceed $5 billion. The Gazette spoke with some Harvard and Berklee faculty members about how they view Swift’s career and her fans.
The most popular musicians in the world have incredibly devoted fan bases that follow them around on their journeys and share every moment. That’s why Swift and Beyonce have such glittering trophy cabinets – it’s hard to argue who’s the bigger artist when it comes to winning awards.
Taylor Swift’s 131-date “Eras” world tour is packing stadiums and has already become the highest-grossing tour ever, with experts estimating that the economic impact of her concerts on host cities will be more than $5 billion. She’s also breaking records when it comes to social media reach, having more followers on Instagram and Facebook than anyone else in the world (although she’s lost ground to Beyonce on Twitter, and hasn’t used the site for over a year).
Jaccodine: It’s really hard to find a better songwriter, melodically speaking. She’s also a very smart and savvy musician. I’m always surprised at how she can take something that may not sound all that interesting harmonically, and make it stand out a lot more. She’s a very talented musician who knows how to make her songs work at the macro level — how they tell a story, or present an attitude – and at the micro level — how her vocals fit into the arrangement.
The other thing that makes her a great singer is her relatability. People identify with her because they have similar experiences to what she’s singing about, whether it’s relationships or growing up and finding their identity. That’s a really important part of being a good entertainer.
